Ingredients

  • 1/2 head califlower rough chop
  • 4 lg mushrooms sliced chopped
  • 1/2 can corn drained ( i love summer crisp)
  • 1/2 can black beans depending on your tummy sometimes we do sometimes we dont but adds good color too.
  • pinch S&P always kosher salt for cooking just cuz mike said so...... LOL
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tbsp taco seasoning I use old el paso low sodium
  • 1/2 cup veggie or chix stock or water As you steam your veggie mixture
  • 1/2 can refried beans for your base layer - the glue - i just warm in the microwave - old elpaso is our fav. but whatever brand type you like.
  • All your taco fixins. sour cream fresh jalepeno, salsa, lettuce, pickled onion,

Instructions

  1. rough chop your head of cauliflower depending how big how many people one medium size head is enough for four people. tonight for the two of us enough tacos for tonight plus maybe a little leftover I’m going to use have a head of cauliflower mushrooms and half a can of corn, beans etc.... you will see this will be very filling i promise. Add your four large mushrooms sliced and chopped into the pan half a can of drained summer crisp corn or whatever canned corn you like a little kosher salt black pepper a little garlic powder 1/ 3 - 1/2 of a can of black beans I like the Goya brand and you’re gonna brown it all and kind of sweat them for a little while turn your heat down and cover with a lid so they cook and steam add the stock or water as listed above and your taco seasoning. Simmer for 15 stiring and making sure not sticking to pan. Turn off heat keep coverd until serving.

  2. We use med. size corn tortillas for the shells and heat in cast iron pan a few at a time cover and repeat as needed. ( i eat 3 tacos and usually 2 in the morning) Mike 4-5....

  3. Warm shells, add a smear of refriend beans than Add all your fixin's no right or wrong way all the same things your top meat tacos with sometimes I do sour cream and cheese and sometimes not..... the light sour cream seems so good on them more tangy - maybe just me??????

  4. Now enjoy - add tabasco, or lime whatever and I promise you will be full - not just ofr Tuesday either. Any ol' day of the week.

Eat and enjoy!  Lmk if you try it and what you want to see next!

BRING THE SPA HOME

Well Hello,

I hope it was a great week for you all.

spa time, dmv spa, spa world centerville, lori tauraso, black hog bbq, dry run ranch, smokehouse properties, dc blogger, saks chevy chase, tyson galleria, ikea, addidas, jlo, gucci, over 50, farrow and ball,

Let’s get right to it.  I’m gonna share with you some fantastic spa treatments I have found to do at home.    It’s great to travel to a spa but sometimes ( hello dumb Covid) that’s not do-able so why not bring the spa home to you!  Below are some great products and tips to create your own oasis.  Self-love and happiness start at home.

  1. Epsom Salt bath – depending on tub size you can use 1/2 cup to 1& 1/2 cups per bath – draw bath & get water as hot as you can stand.  Let the salt dissolve and sit for 20 min.  Help to relieve sore muscles, aches & encourages your lymph system to remove toxins.  I keep at least one glass of cold water nearby a washcloth to place over my head (dampen with cool water to keep from overheating).
  2. Lush terry bathrobe – I have two on hand ( from IKEA or Amazon white easy to bleach). HERE, However, you can get any kind you like and keep nearby.
  3. Plush oversized White bath towels – self-explanatory.  BIG WHITE TOWELS HERE Again always white easy to clean with bleach and creates a sense of clean serene calm environment for me.  I take that cue from all the spas I visit.
  4. Essential oils & diffuser – I adore eucalyptus and will add to the diffuser and to the hot bath water – it encourages me to inhale deeply and I just love the scent – however any scent you find that is pleasing to you will help you relax.  You can find them at any health food store and I recently found really good on Amazon! My Amazon Shop scroll down and see the oils
  5. Light candle as many as you can – white of course and all sizes.  Or dim the lights at the very least.
  6. Depending on my mood I may put my Ipad on with soothing music or watch some episodes of Parks and Rec…… or binge YouTube / Netflix
  7. Body scrubs – you can buy some great ones ( hello Goop and my girl Gwenethyth) or make your own – sugar olive oil and EVVO – coffee grounds and EVVO with some essential oils (just be careful now for slipping later when ya get out….. believe me sounds like you should know this but I almost took a nosedive after a long hot oil type scrub).
  8. Dry brushing – I do this before I enter the bath or shower to help improve circulation – slough off dead skin and again get the lymph system moving. I got a fantastic brush and oil from  Goop.
  9. Face masks and not the horrible kind we have been forced to wear.  Remove all makeup – place warm (hot as you can stand) washcloth over your face and apply a clay mask to your tea zone than add eye patches while you just soak and relax – 15 min later rinse face with lukewarm than cool water.
  10. Dry off moisturize ( i am really loving the new Nivea body lotion ) or a nice light scented oil – wrap in that robe.
  11. Make a cup of mint tea or sleepy time ( depending on the time of day).  Just let your body cool off and relax baby – it’s been a long week.

If looking for day spas near DC here are some of my favorites:

Salamander Resort & Spa Middleburg, VA

SPA WORLD A TRADITIONAL KOREAN BATH HOUSE MY FAVORITE FOR YEARS

Lansdowne Resort & Spa ( this is where I had my first glycolic peel over 10 years ago – close to 15yrs ago).

Maryland Cryotherapy it is new to me and something I am going to do in the next week or so.  Stay tuned and I will bring you along – good for your body and they even have a cryo facial (think to depuff lift and tighten) all music to my ears.

I hope you do something nice for yourself this weekend, today, and every day.  If you do a “spa at home” tag me on your FB & Insta would love to hear how you like it.

MOVING TO THE COUNTRY IS BACK IN VOGUE, ESPECIALLY IN THE DMV”, SAYS LORI TAURASO OF DRY RUN RANCH (THAT’S ME).

I have always loved design, decor, architecture, and it has been fun working on projects throughout the years but now I get to really bring it all together with Our Custom Home.  Mike and I purchased a 50-acre farm outside of Frederick, MD.  To say it has been a process is putting it mildly.  The septic, the permits, the well trying to nail the final drawings down, and finding a builder……that doesn’t mind the fact we will be very hands-on and specific about finishes quality, etc.   In the end, we have decided to do it ourselves with the help of a Project Manager.  Between Mike and myself we have built 10 restaurants, 4 renovations, and a few smaller projects over the past 20 years.  We know some of the best tradespeople around.  I have always wanted to get into the construction business so Now Is Now!

I will be bringing you along with me on the dream come true.  Sharing our finishes, the decisions, the good bad, and the ugly uploading videos as well.  I want to share it all with you and hear your feedback.  Sometimes I may ask for advice on Instagram/Instastories etc. so please follow there as well as my YouTube Channel.     Insta HEREYouTube HERE

  • Olive Oil
  • Leeks – 1 bunch – rough chop (remove green tips)
  • Onions- 1 – rough chop
  • Fennel Bulb – 1 – rough slice
  • Celery – 6 stalks – rough chop
  • Bay Leaves – fresh – 3 each
  • Fresh Thyme – 4 sprigs
  • Shallots – 2 – sliced
  • Garlic – 1/2 head – smashed
  • Saffron – 1/2 t
  • San Marzano Tomatoes – 1 can (303)
  • Lobster Shells – blanch lobster – Remove meat for the stew. Keep all shells and liquid
  • Fish Carcass + head 1 (use mild fish like snapper-grouper-rockfish) rough chop
  • Shrimp Shells – from a pound of 16-20 count shrimp (save peeled shrimp for stew)
  • Cherry Stone Clams (4-6)
  • White Wine – 2 bottles (sauvignon blanc-chardonnay)
Saute vegetables, herbs, and saffron in a roasting pan for about 10-15 minutes. Season gently with a little salt and black pepper. Sweat veggies but don’t brown them at all. Add the lobster shells, fish carcasses, shrimp shells, and clams. Cook for an additional 5-10 minutes. Deglaze the pan with white wine. Place this mixture into a stockpot. Add the San Marzano tomatoes and water to cover about 2 inches above the fish/veggie mixture. Bring to a boil then drop down to a simmer. As the stock begins to boil, skim the top to remove the foam/impurities. Allow it to simmer for about 1 1/2 -2 hours. When the stock has cooked down, strain the liquid into another stockpot. Press the cooked mixture in the colander with a spoon to release all the juices/flavor. Reduce this strained stock almost 50% until the liquid develops viscosity and intense flavors. 21 day cleanse – Shopping List – Start Monday/Tuesday

Happy Sunday Everyone,

As I mentioned earlier in the week I’m gonna do another 21 day cleanse.  Below is the shopping list instructions and you can start whenever you want Monday or Tuesday this week is when I’m digging down.  BTW – this can be a modified cleanse go as strict or long as you want and/or can.  If you have a fridge full of food use that up first and start a few days later.  We don’t want anyone wasting food.  lori tauraso, urablankslate, lori tauraso youtube, 21 day cleanse, detox, fasting, the dc bloggers, bytdc, maryland farms, over fifty, gut health, tauraso food group, black hog bbq, dry run ranch, magnolia table,

Here are some parameters for this cleanse.   I feel you should stick hard and fast to see the best results.

  • NO ALCOHOL PERIOD NOT A GLASS, SHOT, MUG… ZERO ZIP NADA
  • NO PROCESSED SUGARS
  • NO EATING PAST 6 PM OTHER THAN WATER, GREEN TEA (CAFFEINE FREE WITH NO SUGAR) OR HOT LEMON WATER – THIS IS IMPORTANT.
  • EAT AT 9 AM. UNTIL THEN ONLY BLACK COFFEE (HOT OR ICED), HOT LEMON WATER, OR GREEN TEA.

WHY BECAUSE WE ARE DOING A BIT OF INTERMITTENT FASTING.  ONCE YOU HAVE ANY SOLID FOODS, DAIRY, SUGAR ETC. YOU BREAK THE FAST. We want our bodies to get into a bit of ketosis.

  • MOVE EVERY DAY FOR A MIN OF 30 MIN. Whatever your health level is – preferably outside to get those fall sunlight healing rays which will enhance your mood.  Be prepared to go through some kind of withdrawal.  If you drink alcohol daily this may be tough but stick with me you will really feel great.  If you are looking to stop smoking could be a good time to do both and maybe even shift focus from the smoking part of it.

The night eating of cereal or sweets is gonna be hard for me and morning no sugar or coffee mate in my morning cup is gonna be a killer I cannot lie.

Listen if you need to ease into this fine take a few days to slowly eliminate but when you are ready commi=ttothe 21 days in a row.

I will update the shopping list as I can but here is a start.  I shop often but maybe you can not again this is just what I am doing and I’d love you to join me.  Use what you have or feel makes sense for you and your life and family.  Do it with a partner – just do something.  21 day cleanse, detox, lori tauraso, jennifer gularson, the dc bloggers, blank slate, lori tauraso you tube, dc magazine, clean eating, loriannmd, Comment & Share your recipes, feelings, etc.  I will be having some facebook and insta live along the way and hoping to get some friends to join me with their expertise.

Remember I am not a doctor or expert in any way at all.  Just a woman who is fifty and feeling sluggish and need to get gut health back on track cuz if that’s good the world is good over here at the Tauraso’s

If your concerned – please check with your doctor to see if this is right for you.

I will be updating on my instastories.  To be fair I may really start hardcore Tuesday because I have some food to use up here in the house one being the green tomatoes that I am gonna try my hand at fried green tomatoes 🍅 for the first time and don’t want to waste these heirloom beauties.

Here is my list for Sunday:

Etiquette – Do You Mind You Manners…….

I have always loved learning about manners and trying to abide by them in my life ( not always able to do achieve it but that is the goal.  There was always an air about a lady who carried herself with style, grace, and always good manners.

lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza,

I think in this day and age it seems to be a lost art.  Not as important anymore to people or overlooked and for me that could not be further from the truth.  The impact can be profound and make or break a situation for you and your brand/business.

I believe in Thank You cards or notes ( not just a text).  I mean receiving a lovely written note ( does not have to belong) means so much and that person stands out to me for sure.

I believe in holding the door for ladies and especially the elderly

Saying please and thank you

Bringing a gift when you go to someone’s home – a bottle of wine….. flowers (already in a vase so the hostess/ host does not have to fuss with them).

Not cussing in public or really at all especially for women – I know that may sound old fashioned just my opinion – it takes away from your message if you have to cuss and be crass to make your point.

Taking the time to learn another culture when in that environment.  It is a respectful way to treat people and cultures and you will be surprised at the pleasure you bring someone with even the smallest gestures of learning “thank you” in the native language.

Silencing your phone when dining or in public shared spaces.  I have always wanted to put a phone booth inside our restaurants for customers to make their call cool right? lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, cell phone manners,

Not being on your phone while going through a check outline. People are there working (unless self CK out) be kind make eye contact – and besides NO ONE wants to hear your conversation.

Not checking your phone while in a conversation with someone – how rude – they are speaking and clearly not important to you because you don’t even pay attention.  If need be step outside to take your call or excuse yourself from the table at the very least.

Teaching your children proper table manners and etiquette as a whole – whole subject on this.  I suggest this book… I also used to take my children to upscale hotels & restaurants.  Talk with the manager and say I am trying to teach manners to treat my oldest who was maybe 5 at the time like the man of the table – explain how and why we do things.  It was a lot of fun we usually just got dessert and tea but they got the idea and highly recommend it.lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, tiffany table manners, manners, etiquette, home schooling ideas, home ec, dc magazine, urablankslate, lori tauraso, blank slate blog, tauraso food group, dry run ranch, black hog bbq, visit frederick, eau resort palm beach, visit maryland, sass magazine frederick, huffington post, washingtonian magazine, travel and leisure,

This could be considered “home ec” class during this time of COVID and homeschooling I would think.  Please think about it – incorporate all your fine china get dressed up and sit around the table and pretend its a “fancy party”.  However, Mike and I have found that more and more establishments do not adhere to manners either they don’t know have not been taught or just don’t care.  Like seating the women first, laying menu at her place setting after she is sat than the man.  Pulling our HER chair.  Taking the order for the women oldest to youngest its insane.  (hate it)!

When all this COVID stuff settles down I am enrolling in the Beaumont Etiquette School It is a modern etiquette school/course that is made for our times and is easy.

lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, beaumont etiquette course,

I found her on YouTube several years back and she had a course at The Plaza NYC.  I know I can hold my own but there are certain nuances that I would love to know so as not to make a faux pas especially when entertain and traveling.  There is a big difference here then in Europe and I want to be “that girl” in the know.  Elegant and classy in all situations (well almost – LOL).  It is not cheap but something I feel will last a lifetime and build more confidence in social situations for myself and you if you decide to do something like this too.  Whether you like it or not your manners, speech, and appearance makes a difference and people notice.  This could also mean the difference fo getting a job or being passed up.  Just saying.

I also collect etiquette books one of my first was Letitia Baldrige’s book you see below that I have had since 1993!  It has been so helpful to me through the years and now that there is YouTube you can watch videos online and take courses but I love these books. lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza,

So are manners and etiquette important to you?  Do you feel it is a dying art?  Do you guide your children/grandchildren on proper manners esp. in public spaces?  Comment below I’m really interested in your feedback.

Have a wonderful Sunday – I look forward to reading your comments.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

Are you getting your beauty sleep?  Do not dismiss the significant effect sleep has on your looks and overall health.  We do not call it beauty sleep for anything.

I have in the last several years had some bouts with insomnia.  tossing and turning, up at 1:23 am until 4:45 than at 5;30 the dogs and or birds wake me for the day.  Uggggg and what to do in the wee hours?  You try and stay quiet, tiptoe around as not to wake the whole house.  I am not that awake to do any real work and I fall down the rabbit hole of Netflix and infomercials

The main symptom of ongoing sleep loss is excessive daytime sleepiness, but other symptoms include:
  • yawning.
  • moodiness.
  • fatigue.
  • irritability.
  • depressed mood.
  • difficulty learning new concepts.
  • forgetfulness.
  • inability to concentrate or a “fuzzy” head.
  • overeating or reaching for sugary foods in the afternoon
  • Fender benders or worse car accidents – driting into others lanes almost “sleep-driving”

So lets set ourselves up to get a good nights sleep

Now I know they say no electronics in the bedroom – ok I turn my phone to silent and only emergency numbers can get through.  However, the TV in the bedroom is not going anywhere.  Mike and I both use it to fall asleep.  I will say that what you watch can be helpful.  Lately to promote sleep (other than reading a history book) we watch the Smithsonian channel or the history channel.  Nothing too jarring and the documentary voices are great.  For some weird reason 10min after we put on Air Disasters we are both sleeping.  I dunno?  Disclaimer – do NOT watch AD before a trip – just bad juju.

A hot or warm bath or shower.  You know me I am all about the bath at night.  Making it a special ritual – to shift your body and brain to “bedtime” winding down.  I love to treat my self with luxury bathtime products laura mercier, bath time, luxury bath, lori tauraso, blankslate blog, urablankslate, bathshop, saks fifth avenue, nyc saks, bath time, bubble bath, lori tauraso, frederick md, style collective. the bloguettes, marriott bonvoy,

One of my long time favorites is Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Honey Bath.  It is mostly no accident I am drawn to this exotic sexy yummy scent.  Pulling from my love of sweets and cooking side.  I also like to be very simple and add Epsom salt, a must for me.  Always – period.  It’s health benefits are endless I even create little foot soaks for Mike when he is tired, run-down or in need of some TLC and bath time would not be complete without good bubbles at least one time a week.  Mr. Bubble old school is best for real bubbles I now use the unscented color and fragrance-free version because I get sensitive to the original one.

Taking the time to do a few small little gestures goes a long way I find in shutting your mind off.  Remember to close drapes and blinds too keeping street lights and the moonlight out. If you are fortunate enough to have blackout drapes – use them.  No big snacks either.  Maybe just fruit or Mike will eat peanut butter toast and I enjoy sleepytime or un-caffeinated tea.  Here is a link to foods that are supposed to help promote a good night’s rest.  HERE

Not getting enough or good sleep has obvious effects but the long term can cause weight gain, poor work performance, trouble at work and sometimes falling asleep at the wheel even if for only a second.  Is so dangerous.!

How do you wind down?  What are your nightly bedtime rituals do you even have any?

I cannot wait to get into the new house – my bathroom – my ensuite, as they say, is going to be spectacular below are some of my favorites.

First Impressions : Front Doors & All The Trimmings

Let’s Talk Front Doors,

We are finally at that stage where I am finalizing some parts of our new home and right now it’s millwork and doors.  I find myself paying close attention to the details and the “bones” of the house.  Particularly doors trim and windows.  First impressions like the front doors and trim will be very impactful.  I will have two double doors when you enter the home.  Mike and I drew the house plans out ourselves last year and took to our friend Bill Ellison of Caddworks to CAD out an engineer for us.  Along the way, I found I made the home very traditional – very European so to speak.  I call it “French Euro Country”.  I have tons of windows and love the look with a nice size pediment at the front.  The question now is…….glass doors to bring light to the foyer?  Or an old-world lot of millwork solid wood door?  Stained white French oak?

elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, md farms, visit frederick, sass magazine md, pop sugar,

The look of something old – just brings me so much joy and the front door really can set the tone to your house.  There will be a courtyard that you walk through and a small porch.  I will have a french door at the mudroom entrance it is at the far end of the front elevation see here:elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, lori ann tauraso, mike tauraso visit frederick,

So the question is what kind of statement do I want to make?  The front door sets the tone really is the first impression to your guests, family, and friends.  I already think about how I will decorate it for the holidays.  Our builders (North Market Construction – Frederick, MD) Sent us to TW Perry in Germantown, MD to get siding, windows, doors, and trim.  I gave them a few pics from my Pinterest board here are some favorites:

This one below is my inspo and envision a big double entry door:  This is my favorite look by far.

So today after our meeting we decided to go with the solid wood custom door!  It will draw inspiration from the door pictured right above.  I am so over the moon!  It will be stunning and give that rustic old world touch I have been dreaming of from the beginning.  I mean look at the hardware – just imagine it being a matte brass look!  Ahhhhhhhhh

Next, we moved on to trim and I had in my mind to do a really large baseboard from the start.  It is important to note that because it can change the placement of the windows and the types of casing you choose as well.  Mine is a whopping 7 inches high!  YES!  That says solid and European.  If you don’t do this in the planning stages if can be a really costly fix.  We will have some picture frame type molding going up the stairs like this :

You can see all I have used as inspo on my Pinterest Board HERE

My interior doors are similar to these very simple but grand at 8ft tall!

For my fixtures I am going to do mixed metals but leaning more towards matte brass or satin finish – Rome & Emtek make lovely hardware and thinking to do some door handles like this: elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, elle decor, emtek, rome hardware, elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, AD Magazine, decor, emtek, rome hardware,

I am also looking at marble for the large island ( 5ft x 12ft) thick edge no waterfall here and as much marble as I can afford for the master bath.  I am loving the Calcutta viola marble with strong veins and white background.elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, elle decor, emtek, rome hardware, emtek, calacutta viola,

I can hardly stand it – it is so elegant and strong and sexy – just what I want in my bath.  Luxury at its best.  Everything else will be white with matte brass fixtures.  I posted what I fell in love with on my instastories

Well, a few of the items are finalized but some are still in planning sessions.  I will bring you with me to the local stone yard and we can see slabs in person.

Ciao Bella Until Next Time – xoxo

GO NUDE………The Nudist Guide

Go Nude,

The Nudist Guide to dressing.  I am so in love with Nude in fashion, decor, and makeup.  I am sharing my top picks that you may want to check out for yourself and come on over to the Nude Side of the street.

Shoes are one of my favorite things period.  Nude shoes even more of a thing for me.  They go with everything (great for travel packing), elongate your legs and just look classy and elegant.  Stuart Weitzman does it well.  And I mean very well.  See some of my favorite examples below.  The Nude Collection from SW

They even come in a few shades of Nude to give you the perfect look.  These are a MUST for any closet!

The next one is very pale, not nude per se but called ‘AIR” I love that name – Side note  I’m gonna customize a paint with that name – stay tuned…. for the farm anyone remembers The Tasting Room when I did a remodel its called used to paint outside ( still up today even under new ownership)  “Nip & tuck”  dark almost black with a hint of red!  Sherwin Williams, you can get it too.

Anywho they are a bit more white but I really like the accessible /walkable heel.

The list would not be complete without the iconic Christian Louboutin – Pigalle Nude red bottom shoes.  They kill your feet but darn look so good.  I had a pair that were too small to start gave them away may get new open toe version.  Cuz I love some red bottom shoes!

so darn pretty…… here are another pair by CL – So classic elegant and I just love them – these are a must in my closet.

Below are a pair of my favorite “dad sneakers”  I don’t have them but when they come in my sized again I sure will!

One of my all-time best are Mules.  They are easy to walk in – don’t pinch my heel look classic and just plain easy.  Run don’t walk to get yours.

Now for some simple nude dresses & clothes easy to mix and match every so KKW……
