21 day cleanse – Shopping List – Start Monday/Tuesday

Happy Sunday Everyone,

As I mentioned earlier in the week I’m gonna do another 21 day cleanse.  Below is the shopping list instructions and you can start whenever you want Monday or Tuesday this week is when I’m digging down.  BTW – this can be a modified cleanse go as strict or long as you want and/or can.  If you have a fridge full of food use that up first and start a few days later.  We don’t want anyone wasting food.  lori tauraso, urablankslate, lori tauraso youtube, 21 day cleanse, detox, fasting, the dc bloggers, bytdc, maryland farms, over fifty, gut health, tauraso food group, black hog bbq, dry run ranch, magnolia table,

Here are some parameters for this cleanse.   I feel you should stick hard and fast to see the best results.

  • NO ALCOHOL PERIOD NOT A GLASS, SHOT, MUG… ZERO ZIP NADA
  • NO PROCESSED SUGARS
  • NO EATING PAST 6 PM OTHER THAN WATER, GREEN TEA (CAFFEINE FREE WITH NO SUGAR) OR HOT LEMON WATER – THIS IS IMPORTANT.
  • EAT AT 9 AM. UNTIL THEN ONLY BLACK COFFEE (HOT OR ICED), HOT LEMON WATER, OR GREEN TEA.

WHY BECAUSE WE ARE DOING A BIT OF INTERMITTENT FASTING.  ONCE YOU HAVE ANY SOLID FOODS, DAIRY, SUGAR ETC. YOU BREAK THE FAST. We want our bodies to get into a bit of ketosis.

  • MOVE EVERY DAY FOR A MIN OF 30 MIN. Whatever your health level is – preferably outside to get those fall sunlight healing rays which will enhance your mood.  Be prepared to go through some kind of withdrawal.  If you drink alcohol daily this may be tough but stick with me you will really feel great.  If you are looking to stop smoking could be a good time to do both and maybe even shift focus from the smoking part of it.

The night eating of cereal or sweets is gonna be hard for me and morning no sugar or coffee mate in my morning cup is gonna be a killer I cannot lie.

Listen if you need to ease into this fine take a few days to slowly eliminate but when you are ready commi=ttothe 21 days in a row.

I will update the shopping list as I can but here is a start.  I shop often but maybe you can not again this is just what I am doing and I’d love you to join me.  Use what you have or feel makes sense for you and your life and family.  Do it with a partner – just do something.  21 day cleanse, detox, lori tauraso, jennifer gularson, the dc bloggers, blank slate, lori tauraso you tube, dc magazine, clean eating, loriannmd, Comment & Share your recipes, feelings, etc.  I will be having some facebook and insta live along the way and hoping to get some friends to join me with their expertise.

Remember I am not a doctor or expert in any way at all.  Just a woman who is fifty and feeling sluggish and need to get gut health back on track cuz if that’s good the world is good over here at the Tauraso’s

If your concerned – please check with your doctor to see if this is right for you.

I will be updating on my instastories.  To be fair I may really start hardcore Tuesday because I have some food to use up here in the house one being the green tomatoes that I am gonna try my hand at fried green tomatoes 🍅 for the first time and don’t want to waste these heirloom beauties.

Here is my list for Sunday:

Etiquette – Do You Mind You Manners…….

I have always loved learning about manners and trying to abide by them in my life ( not always able to do achieve it but that is the goal.  There was always an air about a lady who carried herself with style, grace, and always good manners.

lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza,

I think in this day and age it seems to be a lost art.  Not as important anymore to people or overlooked and for me that could not be further from the truth.  The impact can be profound and make or break a situation for you and your brand/business.

I believe in Thank You cards or notes ( not just a text).  I mean receiving a lovely written note ( does not have to belong) means so much and that person stands out to me for sure.

I believe in holding the door for ladies and especially the elderly

Saying please and thank you

Bringing a gift when you go to someone’s home – a bottle of wine….. flowers (already in a vase so the hostess/ host does not have to fuss with them).

Not cussing in public or really at all especially for women – I know that may sound old fashioned just my opinion – it takes away from your message if you have to cuss and be crass to make your point.

Taking the time to learn another culture when in that environment.  It is a respectful way to treat people and cultures and you will be surprised at the pleasure you bring someone with even the smallest gestures of learning “thank you” in the native language.

Silencing your phone when dining or in public shared spaces.  I have always wanted to put a phone booth inside our restaurants for customers to make their call cool right? lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, cell phone manners,

Not being on your phone while going through a check outline. People are there working (unless self CK out) be kind make eye contact – and besides NO ONE wants to hear your conversation.

Not checking your phone while in a conversation with someone – how rude – they are speaking and clearly not important to you because you don’t even pay attention.  If need be step outside to take your call or excuse yourself from the table at the very least.

Teaching your children proper table manners and etiquette as a whole – whole subject on this.  I suggest this book… I also used to take my children to upscale hotels & restaurants.  Talk with the manager and say I am trying to teach manners to treat my oldest who was maybe 5 at the time like the man of the table – explain how and why we do things.  It was a lot of fun we usually just got dessert and tea but they got the idea and highly recommend it.lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, tiffany table manners, manners, etiquette, home schooling ideas, home ec, dc magazine, urablankslate, lori tauraso, blank slate blog, tauraso food group, dry run ranch, black hog bbq, visit frederick, eau resort palm beach, visit maryland, sass magazine frederick, huffington post, washingtonian magazine, travel and leisure,

This could be considered “home ec” class during this time of COVID and homeschooling I would think.  Please think about it – incorporate all your fine china get dressed up and sit around the table and pretend its a “fancy party”.  However, Mike and I have found that more and more establishments do not adhere to manners either they don’t know have not been taught or just don’t care.  Like seating the women first, laying menu at her place setting after she is sat than the man.  Pulling our HER chair.  Taking the order for the women oldest to youngest its insane.  (hate it)!

When all this COVID stuff settles down I am enrolling in the Beaumont Etiquette School It is a modern etiquette school/course that is made for our times and is easy.

lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza, beaumont etiquette course,

I found her on YouTube several years back and she had a course at The Plaza NYC.  I know I can hold my own but there are certain nuances that I would love to know so as not to make a faux pas especially when entertain and traveling.  There is a big difference here then in Europe and I want to be “that girl” in the know.  Elegant and classy in all situations (well almost – LOL).  It is not cheap but something I feel will last a lifetime and build more confidence in social situations for myself and you if you decide to do something like this too.  Whether you like it or not your manners, speech, and appearance makes a difference and people notice.  This could also mean the difference fo getting a job or being passed up.  Just saying.

I also collect etiquette books one of my first was Letitia Baldrige’s book you see below that I have had since 1993!  It has been so helpful to me through the years and now that there is YouTube you can watch videos online and take courses but I love these books. lori tauraso, modern manners, emily post, etiquette, the plazza,

So are manners and etiquette important to you?  Do you feel it is a dying art?  Do you guide your children/grandchildren on proper manners esp. in public spaces?  Comment below I’m really interested in your feedback.

Have a wonderful Sunday – I look forward to reading your comments.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

Are you getting your beauty sleep?  Do not dismiss the significant effect sleep has on your looks and overall health.  We do not call it beauty sleep for anything.

I have in the last several years had some bouts with insomnia.  tossing and turning, up at 1:23 am until 4:45 than at 5;30 the dogs and or birds wake me for the day.  Uggggg and what to do in the wee hours?  You try and stay quiet, tiptoe around as not to wake the whole house.  I am not that awake to do any real work and I fall down the rabbit hole of Netflix and infomercials

The main symptom of ongoing sleep loss is excessive daytime sleepiness, but other symptoms include:
  • yawning.
  • moodiness.
  • fatigue.
  • irritability.
  • depressed mood.
  • difficulty learning new concepts.
  • forgetfulness.
  • inability to concentrate or a “fuzzy” head.
  • overeating or reaching for sugary foods in the afternoon
  • Fender benders or worse car accidents – driting into others lanes almost “sleep-driving”

So lets set ourselves up to get a good nights sleep

Now I know they say no electronics in the bedroom – ok I turn my phone to silent and only emergency numbers can get through.  However, the TV in the bedroom is not going anywhere.  Mike and I both use it to fall asleep.  I will say that what you watch can be helpful.  Lately to promote sleep (other than reading a history book) we watch the Smithsonian channel or the history channel.  Nothing too jarring and the documentary voices are great.  For some weird reason 10min after we put on Air Disasters we are both sleeping.  I dunno?  Disclaimer – do NOT watch AD before a trip – just bad juju.

A hot or warm bath or shower.  You know me I am all about the bath at night.  Making it a special ritual – to shift your body and brain to “bedtime” winding down.  I love to treat my self with luxury bathtime products laura mercier, bath time, luxury bath, lori tauraso, blankslate blog, urablankslate, bathshop, saks fifth avenue, nyc saks, bath time, bubble bath, lori tauraso, frederick md, style collective. the bloguettes, marriott bonvoy,

One of my long time favorites is Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Honey Bath.  It is mostly no accident I am drawn to this exotic sexy yummy scent.  Pulling from my love of sweets and cooking side.  I also like to be very simple and add Epsom salt, a must for me.  Always – period.  It’s health benefits are endless I even create little foot soaks for Mike when he is tired, run-down or in need of some TLC and bath time would not be complete without good bubbles at least one time a week.  Mr. Bubble old school is best for real bubbles I now use the unscented color and fragrance-free version because I get sensitive to the original one.

laura mercier, bath time, luxury bath, lori tauraso, blankslate blog, urablankslate, bathshop, saks fifth avenue, nyc saks, bath time, bubble bath, lori tauraso, frederick md, style collective. the bloguettes, marriott bonvoyI also love an atomizer with lavender in it.  Superpringly Mike loves that scent too – go figure.  Now, dimming all the lights or lighting candles is even better like you see me do above works wonders too.  Getting your whole space in the quiet zone.

Taking the time to do a few small little gestures goes a long way I find in shutting your mind off.  Remember to close drapes and blinds too keeping street lights and the moonlight out. If you are fortunate enough to have blackout drapes – use them.  No big snacks either.  Maybe just fruit or Mike will eat peanut butter toast and I enjoy sleepytime or un-caffeinated tea.  Here is a link to foods that are supposed to help promote a good night’s rest.  HERE

Not getting enough or good sleep has obvious effects but the long term can cause weight gain, poor work performance, trouble at work and sometimes falling asleep at the wheel even if for only a second.  Is so dangerous.!

How do you wind down?  What are your nightly bedtime rituals do you even have any?

I cannot wait to get into the new house – my bathroom – my ensuite, as they say, is going to be spectacular below are some of my favorites.

First Impressions : Front Doors & All The Trimmings

Let’s Talk Front Doors,

We are finally at that stage where I am finalizing some parts of our new home and right now it’s millwork and doors.  I find myself paying close attention to the details and the “bones” of the house.  Particularly doors trim and windows.  First impressions like the front doors and trim will be very impactful.  I will have two double doors when you enter the home.  Mike and I drew the house plans out ourselves last year and took to our friend Bill Ellison of Caddworks to CAD out an engineer for us.  Along the way, I found I made the home very traditional – very European so to speak.  I call it “French Euro Country”.  I have tons of windows and love the look with a nice size pediment at the front.  The question now is…….glass doors to bring light to the foyer?  Or an old-world lot of millwork solid wood door?  Stained white French oak?

elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, md farms, visit frederick, sass magazine md, pop sugar,

The look of something old – just brings me so much joy and the front door really can set the tone to your house.  There will be a courtyard that you walk through and a small porch.  I will have a french door at the mudroom entrance it is at the far end of the front elevation see here:elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, lori ann tauraso, mike tauraso visit frederick,

So the question is what kind of statement do I want to make?  The front door sets the tone really is the first impression to your guests, family, and friends.  I already think about how I will decorate it for the holidays.  Our builders (North Market Construction – Frederick, MD) Sent us to TW Perry in Germantown, MD to get siding, windows, doors, and trim.  I gave them a few pics from my Pinterest board here are some favorites:

This one below is my inspo and envision a big double entry door:  This is my favorite look by far.

So today after our meeting we decided to go with the solid wood custom door!  It will draw inspiration from the door pictured right above.  I am so over the moon!  It will be stunning and give that rustic old world touch I have been dreaming of from the beginning.  I mean look at the hardware – just imagine it being a matte brass look!  Ahhhhhhhhh

Next, we moved on to trim and I had in my mind to do a really large baseboard from the start.  It is important to note that because it can change the placement of the windows and the types of casing you choose as well.  Mine is a whopping 7 inches high!  YES!  That says solid and European.  If you don’t do this in the planning stages if can be a really costly fix.  We will have some picture frame type molding going up the stairs like this :

You can see all I have used as inspo on my Pinterest Board HERE

My interior doors are similar to these very simple but grand at 8ft tall!

For my fixtures I am going to do mixed metals but leaning more towards matte brass or satin finish – Rome & Emtek make lovely hardware and thinking to do some door handles like this: elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, elle decor, emtek, rome hardware, elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, AD Magazine, decor, emtek, rome hardware,

I am also looking at marble for the large island ( 5ft x 12ft) thick edge no waterfall here and as much marble as I can afford for the master bath.  I am loving the Calcutta viola marble with strong veins and white background.elle decor, rue magazine, dc magazine, modern luxury, washingtonian magazine, dry run ranch, elle decor, emtek, rome hardware, emtek, calacutta viola,

I can hardly stand it – it is so elegant and strong and sexy – just what I want in my bath.  Luxury at its best.  Everything else will be white with matte brass fixtures.  I posted what I fell in love with on my instastories

Well, a few of the items are finalized but some are still in planning sessions.  I will bring you with me to the local stone yard and we can see slabs in person.

Ciao Bella Until Next Time – xoxo

GO NUDE………The Nudist Guide

Go Nude,

The Nudist Guide to dressing.  I am so in love with Nude in fashion, decor, and makeup.  I am sharing my top picks that you may want to check out for yourself and come on over to the Nude Side of the street.

Shoes are one of my favorite things period.  Nude shoes even more of a thing for me.  They go with everything (great for travel packing), elongate your legs and just look classy and elegant.  Stuart Weitzman does it well.  And I mean very well.  See some of my favorite examples below.  The Nude Collection from SW

They even come in a few shades of Nude to give you the perfect look.  These are a MUST for any closet!

The next one is very pale, not nude per se but called ‘AIR” I love that name – Side note  I’m gonna customize a paint with that name – stay tuned…. for the farm anyone remembers The Tasting Room when I did a remodel its called used to paint outside ( still up today even under new ownership)  “Nip & tuck”  dark almost black with a hint of red!  Sherwin Williams, you can get it too.

Anywho they are a bit more white but I really like the accessible /walkable heel.

The list would not be complete without the iconic Christian Louboutin – Pigalle Nude red bottom shoes.  They kill your feet but darn look so good.  I had a pair that were too small to start gave them away may get new open toe version.  Cuz I love some red bottom shoes!

so darn pretty…… here are another pair by CL – So classic elegant and I just love them – these are a must in my closet.

Below are a pair of my favorite “dad sneakers”  I don’t have them but when they come in my sized again I sure will!

One of my all-time best are Mules.  They are easy to walk in – don’t pinch my heel look classic and just plain easy.  Run don’t walk to get yours.

Now for some simple nude dresses & clothes easy to mix and match every so KKW……

COVID-19 AT HOME DIY BEAUTY

Well, My People,

Here we are still at home.  A few things are lifting but it is slow and going on 11 weeks here in the DMV.  I hope first and foremost you and your family are healthy and safe and sound.  With that being said.  Life is different – no hair appts. no nails, botox, hydrafacials, laser treatments, spray tans dentist appts. its all on hold.  Well listen here baby we gotta keep ourselves feeling good on the inside and the out!  I am here to give you some Covid-19 at-home DIY beauty treatments I have done for years.  Now, these types of things are more important since we can go anywhere, am I right?   I am going to give a list of pretty basic products and the recipes to have at ti.  This Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to treat yourself or maybe even your mother, daughter, and spouse.  (Mike loves facials and foot soaks just saying they may need a little TLC too).  I will give you the list of products and break treatments down to two posts.  See the list below.

Then put it over your face – I concentrate under my eyes and around my nose area anything puffy in the morning.  let it sit for 10 min. with a towel under you – they dry and drop off   Or do it in the bath.  Your skin may begin to tingle this is good its the acids in the coffee working.  Tolerate as long as you can up to 10 min then rinse with warm water and finish with cold water rinse – add moisturizer and Volia – Lovey start and a smooth blank canvas for the day.

Mix the two together and make a paste or put cleaners on face lather than add 1 tablespoon baking soda on top and gently rub all over – even under the eyes – it’s natural so should be fine

After rinsing your face with warm then cold water and finish with your nighttime serums moisturizer eye creams.  Don’t forget your lips.

Bath Time:  Even better when puppies are involved like my baby Lincoln here…..

Fill the tub with hot water (hot as you can stand) add 2-4 cups Epsom salt depending on tub size than add 1/2 cup baking soda – use the dry brush all over before getting into the tub.  this is not a great feeling but don’t do it to make yourself hurt just to get things moving and always go towards your heart.  Next soak for 20 min.  Sip on lemon water while in there not to get overheated.  I also add my essential oils whichever one you prefer mine is ALWAYS eucalyptus.  I will have two washcloths handy to one to put cold water on and then top my head and face when I’m too hot and one to ut essential oils on with the hot water and lay on my chest and inhale deeply.  I will set my iPhone to some soothing music and just breathe.

Come back tomorrow I’ll show you some of the other DIY Pantry Beauty treatments to do from the list – you will love them promise – esp the egg and apple cider vinegar with milk powder….

One Of My Favorites – Friday Night Dinner & Enough For Lunch This Weekend Too

OK Ladies (& Gents),

It has been almost one week of this cleanse – I am going for 3 weeks maybe a month.  I am down about 4 1/2 pounds.  I did cave yesterday and have a Jumbo Rice Crispy treat but other than that pretty darn good.  Sunday morning I am getting into the gym.  I am fortunate enough to have one in the basement and time to kick off the dust!  This Friday night dinner recipe is one of my favorites that I found on Foodie Crush who found it from the fantastic cookbook – Nourishing Superfood Bowl:  75 Healthy and Delicious Gluten-Free Meals to Fuel Your Day by Lindsay Cotter blogger Cotter Crunch.  I have modified it a little bit to cut out the sugar ( like ya don’t need honey or marmalade ) the sweetness of the oranges or clementines cuts the wee bit of spice – you can easily modify all this to your liking.

Nourishing SuperFood Bowls Cookbook | foodiecrush.com

Photo Credit for above and just below from Foodie Crush – Love her blog all the recipes I’ve tried from her are the bomb dot com!  Now down to business.

Meal prep tip #1: This simple marinade can be made and mixed with the chicken the day before, then baked or grilled when you’re ready to eat.

Add fresh orange slices to tamari (certified gluten-free if you’re going for it) or soy sauce for that umami, salted flavor, to a blender to mix well and serve as a marinade and a dressing, both.

Meal prep tip # 2: Grill or bake the chicken ahead of time, and dinner is ready when you are.

Add the oranges to the grill or oven and roast for even more sweetness.

Meal prep tip #3: Make the broccoli rice, stick it in the fridge, and add a healthy, vegetarian, gluten-free alternative to rice or pasta to this pasta bowl at your service.

While you could try and chop the broccoli to this fine consistency, whizzing in a food processor until fine, to me, is the way to go.

I added a whole tablespoon more sesame oil to the broccoli for flavor than Lindsay’s original recipe, so add to meet your own tastebuds, like so many other recipes out there!

Meal prep tip #4: Assemble the ingredients in a bowl and drizzle with extra orange marinade and toss with fresh herbs because that’s what makes it all so good.

ANTI – BLOAT DRINK – JILLIAN MICHAELS RECIPE

Anti bloat drink:

Here you go fellow cleansers the anti-bloat drink recipe – famous from Jillian Michaels You can sip on this all day long – really helps I enjoy the bitter taste. It super simple to make only 4 ingredients and one is water!

This is Jillian Michaels’ detox water.  It consists of distilled water, cranberry juice, organic dandelion root tea, and lemon juice. Why these particular ingredients mixed together? It’s a natural diuretic drink!

But WAIT! Isn’t distilled water bad for you? The short answer is no…distilled water isn’t bad for you. Many people have this misconception because distilled water is slightly acidic and doesn’t contain any organic minerals because everything except for the pure H2O is removed during the distillation process. You want to use distilled water for a cleanse or detox because you want the pure water to help remove toxins from your system, not add more toxins back into your system!

Moreover, your kidneys regulate the minerals you consume through the foods you eat, so unless you have existing kidney issues, this drink will not harm you however if you have questions ask with your doctor or ask Jennifer from yesterday’s post on Instagram:  @ jennifergularson she is a PA-CIFMCP Functional Medicine practitioner With that said, we use spring water or alkalized water for daily water consumption while not detoxing. We don’t recommend distilled water for daily consumption because our diets are already very acidic by nature, so alkaline water is the best way to go to keep your pH balance in check.

This is a detox water that you drink along with your clean, healthy meals…it is not designed to be a full-fledged cleanse, rather it should be used to reduce bloating and water weight. It’s perfect to drink when you’re seven days away from a big event. ours on Amazon. Below are a few links to the products: Organic Dandelion Root Tea Bags Pure Cranberry Juice Pure Lemon Juice

The Quarantine Cleanse – We Can Come Out Of This Better – Stronger – Glowing

Morning All & Happy Sunday,

As I mentioned on FB & Inta yesterday – I am done with the gorging and bad eating during this isolation from COVID’19.  So yesterday I started to eliminate some yucky foods – I did NOT have my normal cherry ice before bed, cut out fast food, chips, etc… I began with some green juice which I shared and gearing up for giving my digestion a break, cleaning out my body and resetting so I feel light, glowing, and energic.

We are going to make chicken stock today and probably 3x’s a week this will be used for soups, but also to sip on through the day – I often add apple cider vinegar (ACV) to it as well to calm your tummy, give it a rest and promote an alkaline environment in your body.  FYI I am a sugar addict always have been and I find this drink really helps me curb the cravings and it so yummy to boot.  You will get collagen from the stock protein and warm your body which in turn is extremely healing.  You may want to grab a copy of this book.  See the book here:  Click here to order the book from my Amazon list. A wealth of information and recipes I will be referring to it often. loriannmd, lori tauraso, clean program, dmv bloggers, the dc bloggers, hot detox, hibernation 2020, maryland bloggers, tauraso food group, anti aging health.

You are going to want to invest in a juicer for veggies and such and a handheld citrus juicer or small plugin one.  I use a Breville juicer and love it but as long as it extracts your juice use whatever you can afford or want.  Here are a few I like and have owned over the years.  Breville Juicer  Hamilton Beach

Chicken Stock For The Soul

I will use this stock for soups and to sip on during my cleanse

Instructions

  1. clean a whole chicken - you can poach whole for a clear stock or cut up and brown for a more rich savory stock (chicken thighs can be used too)

  2. in stock pot get pan hot then add olive oil to coat bottom and 1 tablespoon butter

  3. add 1 half large onion - sweet or white - chopped Lightly S&P (use kosher salt) you are building flavor in layors and we do not want too much salt in here.

  4. add 4 stalks cleaned chopped celry

    Lightly brown

  5. Add chicken pieces and stir often getting all parts brown but not burnt - Med-High heat

  6. Add garlic cloves about 4 chopped turn heat down (DO NOT BURN GARLIC)

  7. ADD Filterd water to cover2 /3 from top of pot - turn up heat to almost high and bring to a boil.

  8. Foam may start tocome to the top you want to skim this off - this is yuck from the bones of the chicken and things we dont want. While on Med - High heat move pot to one side of flame you will see foam settles toone side and easier to skim off.

  9. Simmer down to enhance the flavor of the stock - I will than chill over night - bring to boil again in themorning - stain through sive or colander put chicken aside - veggies etc. discard or save for your pups like I do.

You now have stock to freeze, sip on or add to soup.

I will be making this soup today – one of my favorites Escorle Soup – you can sub with any green you like just be sure to rinse very well the leaves have lots of dirt and sand. My Escarole Soup

or try the Cauliflower White Bean Soup to use with the stock

A detox program results in improved symptoms and an increased sense of wellbeing for most individuals. Many who participate in a personalized detox program describe the improvement in pain and fatigue levels, enhanced cognitive function and moods, more effective and satisfying sleep cycles, and weight loss.

On a daily basis, your liver, kidneys, large intestine, lymphatic system, and sweat glands work to reduce the body burden, or buildup, of environmental contaminants.

Your toxic body burden is a result of three main factors:

  • The number of toxicant exposures from both internal and external sources.

  • Your ability to produce detox enzymes for processing these compoundS. This is based on your unique genetics and familial influence.

  • The amount of detox supporting nutrients consumed in your diet. Specific foods support the processes of changing toxic chemicals and waste products to less harmful forms and assist in their elimination.

This is why part of efficient detoxification is ensuring you have all of the nutrients necessary to complete the dozen or so reactions required to turn toxins into inert substances that can be eliminated from the body. Without them, your body simply cannot do what it needs to do to keep you healthy and thriving.

Many times people who are going through a detox program, jump in with 2 feet and do things a little too quickly.   To use an analogy, they fill the bathtub up with water and have not made sure the drain is working.  To avoid this there are a couple of things you should make sure you are doing before taxing your body to detox.

  • Water, water, water – making sure you are hydrated to perform all these processes efficiently

  • Elimination (pooping) – once you detoxify these compounds we need to get them out of our system. Making sure you are having good stools at LEAST once a day

  • Movement – you want to make sure you are walking or moving each day to promote healthy elimination

  • Sweat – saunas are good or even a hot bath, you can eliminate toxins this way too

To make sure your gut health is up and running prior to detoxification, here are some things you can add to your diet to get things moving:

  • FIber – ground flax works well or inulin powder

    • Fiber not only provides bulk to your stools and binds toxins for excretion, but it also makes up one of our body’s physical barriers.

    • Fiber increases glycoproteins called mucins, which help to make up mucus. Mucus protects the lining of the gut, provides lubrication, and prevents the translocation of toxins and other harmful substances.

  • Probiotics –  good bacteria to help promote gut health

  • L-Glutamine – to help heal and seal your gut lining

  • Collagen supplements – bone broth is good for this

  • Cilantro, chlorella and other dark leafy green vegetables for the chlorophyll

Your body detoxifies in two phases and then eliminates those toxins.  As you lose weight, you are liberating what is stored in fat cells.  Toxins that are not able to be eliminated quickly usually end up in your fat storage.  So as you lose weight, your need for detoxification increases. Each of the phases of detoxification requires certain nutrients to be present to do it effectively.

Phase 1

Detox phase 1 takes place in your liver and is carried out by cytochrome P450 enzymes and (caution, technical words here) includes dehalogenation, hydrolysis, hydration, oxidation and reduction reactions.

The nutrients needed for Phase 1 reactions are:

B-vitamins (Methylated or Co-enzymated/Activated B-Complex is best):  Riboflavin (aka, B2), Niacin (aka, B3), B6 (aka, pyridoxine), Folic acid (aka, B9), B12

Vitamin C – Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that plays an important role in detoxification, including the metabolism and elimination of heavy metals

Vitamin E

Magnesium Glycinate

Glutathione and N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

It’s impossible to talk about detoxification without discussing the role of glutathione. Essentially, glutathione functions as an antioxidant, which helps reduce oxidative stress and remove free radicals generated during the detoxification process (Phase 1). Glutathione also acts as a cofactor for a number of antioxidant enzymes and aids in recycling antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E.

Due to its poor absorbability in the human digestive tract, glutathione supplements are commonly prescribed in liposomal form. This can be costly and sometimes difficult to find. Enter NAC!

N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a precursor to glutathione, helps to maintain glutathione levels and neutralize free radicals.  It is readily available and helps your body create its own Glutathione.

Phase 2

Once the liver has done its job, the secondary detoxification organs work to eliminate waste from the body. Our skin helps eliminate toxins through sweating, while our lungs do the same through respiration. The gastrointestinal tract and kidneys help us eliminate toxins that have been filtered through the liver via bowel movements and urination.

Supplements to help support Phase 2 Detoxification:

Curcumin (Tumeric)

Essential fatty acids (Fish Oil)

Sulfur-containing compounds from the onion and cruciferous vegetable families

Sulforaphane – (BROCCOLI SPROUTS!!)

Sulforaphane is a phytochemical metabolized from glucoraphanin and can be obtained through the diet by consuming glucoraphanin-rich foods such as broccoli and broccoli sprouts, brussels sprouts, and cabbage (James et al., 2012). Sulforaphane is an essential component of the detoxification pathway as it activates the production of phase II liver enzymes.
